After sharing the inspiration yesterday, and lil’ sneak peeks on Instagram, I’m so excited to finally reveal Liam’s room! So lets pretend to all take a seat on that sweet yellow bed and soak it all in, because that’s exactly what I did the second this project was complete. I looked around, eyes welled-up (a bit like they are now), because I realized while we had purchased a few new items for the space, we had also handcrafted or chosen artisanal pieces that told a story. And, for a 3 1/2 year old, life is all about storytelling. I’m so pleased with how it turned out, and hope it inspires some of you to make a transformation of your own.

I’m just going to dive right in to a few of the DIY elements that I created to give his room that handcrafted feel. First up, I created that handwoven Mexican star weave wall hanging. While getting lost on Pinterest (as one does), I stumbled on Simple Grove. Her DIY contributor Elise Vaughn created something similar, and I knew I needed try and recreate it. After a trip to Michaels and about 6 hours of weaving later, viola!  I’ve never created anything like this. It’s so easy and dare I say, addicting. Pretty awesome, right?

The 100lc girls and I are a just a *little* obsessed with indigo dying. So much so that when I told Kristina I planned to dip dye Liam’s curtains she got so excited and looked for any excuse to do the same. Why not, right? It only takes a couple of days and the results are always so surprising! In a good way, of course.

Our dear friend, Mr Ainsley actually sold us that amazing striped surfboard. We really hope he starts making more, and opens a shop one of these days. Such a super talented guy!

Ok now, what kid wouldn’t be super stoked to have a skateboard shelf? We’ve had this deck in our family for quite sometime, so it’s so nice to finally give it the perfect home. We’ll be sharing the how-to tomorrow!

As I mentioned in the inspiration post, we purchased a few of the prints from Society 6. But we wanted to make this wall a little more special, so we used Liam’s own artwork, (featured top right). He also helped me create the tryptic. This wall turned out to be a wonderful mix of personal mementos + new pieces. It weaves the story from when he was first born to the present.

For the shelving unit I knew I didn’t want just a plain white shelf. I started noticing a white and wood trend taking over in the room, so instantly thought about purchasing an affordable Ikea shelf and sprucing it up using plywood, which we stained and painted. I’ll share a more detailed DIY later!

This Mid-Century dresser off craigslist was a total score at $80. CHEAP! All it needed was a little TLC, so we refinished it with some stain and paint. The hardest part of this project was the sanding. It takes some time, but the results are worth every soar muscle. It was such a serious money saver, but if I could think of one area that we splurged on it would be that wave wallpaper. So glad we did. I knew we wanted one graphic wall in the room, I just couldn’t visualize what it should be until I saw Sarah Yate’s bedroom makeover. Her bedroom inspired me so much! It was exactly the organic graphic moment that would complete his room. I didn’t think twice and went straight to Abigal Edwards site and purchased 2 rolls, which she told me would be just the right amount for my wall dimensions. Purchasing it wasn’t all that expensive. It was getting it installed that was. I can do a lot of things, but installing wallpaper is not one of them! That said, I found out that if you contact your local paint store, not a Home Depot, but someone smaller, they normally have a list of handy people that will hang wallpaper and work within your budget. Hiring the help to hang it, plus the wallpaper, the cost came to $400. It’s such a great focal point in his room, and a brings a lot of depth to the space. We love it!

We’re so in love with this handcrafted plant stand created by Amanda’s father-in-law. Pretty awesome, right?

Liam’s not a baby anymore, and he’ll be the first to tell you that. He’s now my little boy! From those humble beginnings in a closet in New York to the super spunky California boy with wild blond hair who now, in my opinion, has the coolest room EVER! See sweetheart, I wasn’t going to keep you in the closet forever, ha! Thanks so much for sharing this journey with me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. Stay tuned tomorrow for a few super easy DIY’s.

xo,
Jillian

What a wonderful room for your little man! The skateboard shelf is unique, eye-catching, and very cleverly hung. The Mexican Star adds the perfect touch of color and texture above Liam's bed. I love all the nautical elements in the bedroom, too. Great job, Jillian!!

Jillian on Jun 17, 2014

@Chris Fuller thanks so much! I wonder if you noticed the lion artwork next to Liam's bed? In small print your see Scott's name. It was hand crocheted by Scott's mother when, I believe, Scott was Liam's age. It's nice to have a little hand-me-down from Scotties youth.

I am absolutely in love with this room…favorite kid's room I've ever seen!!! I'm actually in the process of redoing my son and daughter's shared room so seeing such inspiration is perfect timing! I would love to know what color paint you used on the wall. I've actually been wanting to use that exact shade in their room, but haven't been able to find the right match yet. This color looks perfect! You captured the casual, California, relaxed yet modern vibe so well I am just blown away! Thanks for sharing with us!

Hi @Darcy! I'm so happy my sons room has inspired you, and hopefully, some of these ideas will help with you new room reno. The paint color I used is BEHR, FLAT Soft Mint, (HDC-MD-19). Good luck, and thanks for all your kind words! Best, Jillian

I love the whale clock! Can you tell me where you bought it?

Jillian on Jun 18, 2014

Hi @Nikki, That's so funny! We got ours in Malawi. My brother-in-law was studying there and brought it back with him. It's one of my favorite pieces!

Jillian on Jun 18, 2014

@Holly, The clock is from the Land of Nod. I must of forgot to add it to the credits. We love it!

Liam's room turned out so great! I love that we were both inspired by a similar vibe - a few of the same things will be in my new babe's nursery, and a few that won't be but that I'm dying over - like that surfboard, your DIY weaving, and that wallpaper! So good. Great job, mama! xx

I know this post is from awhile back....but where is that beautiful wood tray with the white design in the center from? This room is my inspiration for my nursery! I just love it!

Hi Elena, The wood tray was from the Target Nate Nerkus collection. I'm not sure it's in stock anymore. ~jillian
