Two reasons we especially love this dinosaur themed 3rd birthday we’re sharing today. For one, we’re celebrating Ashley of Woodlark‘s son Elliot, who’s DIY nature-themed second birthday we featured last year (see it here). The year before that, you all took a peek at his wood + white nursery space. Oh, how he’s grown! Second, as Ash and her little guy love all things nature, she made use of lost of DIY projects, vintage items, and things they already had for a truly homemade 3rd birthday. Ash and Elliot do nature studies every week, so when he requested a dinosaur theme, she already had loads of inspiration.

Ashley found this amazing dinosaur tracks poster from Creek and Main Co on Etsy and created a DIY poster frame with wooden dowels, which you can find more details about (and instructions) on her blog. The other posters are prints from vintage children’s dinosaur books, and Ashley also made a fossil “specimen frame” using real fossils for the final piece in the gallery wall. Dinosaur bone sugar cookies in “dirt” (AKA crushed cookies), dinosaur eggs, and pteranodon nests (AKA chocolate eggs) all filled the dessert table, along with a cake and cupcakes by SusieCakes.

Ashley tells it, Nature is a huge part of our lives, and placing the focus on the science and discovery aspect of the prehistoric time period seemed very fitting. Something that was important to me was to make as much as I could by hand and to buy minimally by repurposing items that I already had.

She created a dinosaur tracks activity where they all used dinosaur figures to make footprints in clay the clay, as well as a “dinosaur evacuation” that had them all digging for bones.
