Thanksgiving kind of screams for natural materials, don’t you think? We’ve been thinking about traditional crafts for this delicious holiday and we kept coming back to the simplicity of corn husks. Guess what you can use them for? Poms! They’re super inexpensive and easy to make, and frankly we’re kind of addicted. We loved the little mobile we made for our Thanksgiving kids’ table and thought maybe some of you might like to make these for next week’s festivities too.

You will need:

1 bag of corn husks (found at grocery stores, especially hispanic markets, and also online.)
2. wire (any kind will do)
3. scissors

First you need to make thin strips from each husk. The easiest way is just to rip them with your hands. Make some thicker and some thinner for a little variety. You’ll also find that some husks are stiffer than others and using a variety of flexibility is a good idea too. You might need to test one of two first to find the ideal amount of pieces for each pom, but this is pretty much the perfect activity to do in front of a movie after the kids have gone to bed so that shouldn’t be a problem!

Once your pieces are shredded and ready to go, make a neat pile. Cut a 5-6 inch piece of wire and wrap it tightly around the center. If you’ve ever made a tissue pom, you know where we’re going from here.

Bend back each piece of husk away from the center until you have a cute little pom.

Fluff as necessary, and voila! You can make them all different sizes, by trimming the length of the whole husk before you start ripping the strips.
