Adult-approved, kid-friendly home design from Homepolish
You spend most of your adult life curating your space, then baby comes into the picture. How do you fuse your style with all the baby gear and bright plastic toys out there? San Francisco Head of Expansion of Homepolish (and cool mom) Janette Crawford took the homes of some of their favorite childless clients and, just hypothetically, sketched out what it would look like for them to have a baby and still keep their great Homepolish style.
For this moody, quirky and sophisticated Brooklyn space, she used items like these geometric wooden blocks (Grimm’s full line of German-made toys are always a favorite), this Saab roadster (A bit spendy, so, perfect for the grandparents’ wishlist), and this wood mobile- a work of art that could hang in any room of the house and will never go out of style. This beautiful SoHo loft’s neutral color palette is an exploration of white. To seamlessly incorporate baby things into this space, it’s all about the color story. Anything bright will stick out like a sore thumb. Janette paired this space with this baby lamb print from The Animal Print Shop’s photo series of baby animals (perfect for any nursery, right?), these balancing blocks (you could even keep these as coffee table decor!), and Jess Brown’s rag doll (made of recycled and antique textiles). The above light-filled cottage is set in LA’s Laurel Canyon. The layered textures and neutral color palette are grown-up yet carefree. That’s why these golden suede Freshly Picked moccs, denim camping tent, and wool mountain pillow work so well in this space. You can see more from this home’s kid-friendly makeover here.
One final tip from Janette: To avoid baby-gear domination, keep two things in mind: A consistent color palette, and passing the test of “Would it look good in the living room?” Because everything eventually ends up in the living room. These filters will keep everything cohesive, as well as keep your baby motif from being too cutesy.
What a fun series, right? You can follow along with the rest of the series on Homepolish.
