Sayulita is probably one of the easiest getaways you can take without too much planning, if you live in Southern California. Our good friend and photographer, Jamie Street has been there twice now – and now that it’s starting to feel like home to her we thought it would be helpful to have her tell us what it’s like staying there as a family, and give us a few tips on where to sleep, eat, shop and swim!

The real treasure for us, and what will keep us coming back, is staying at Casa Ninamu. It’s a short golf cart ride to get to Anne + Johann’s estate from the center of town, which is perfect as it acts as a bit of a sanctary from the busy center. Sayulita can be a liiiitle noisy (chickens, general revelry), so the private beach, expansive lawns, and inviting little blue house can feel like an absolute sanctuary.

Sayulita is a sleepy little fishing village, filled with surfer expats and adorable boutiques, but also has a bit of a bustle to it. Our pleasures there are simple; getting Henry an ice cream cone so he will sit while we enjoy some mezcal at the bar at Hotel Hafa. Choosing a sidewalk table across from the town square so that Henry will sit through a leisurely dinner, mesmerized by the stilt walkers, musicians, and fire performers (notice a theme?). We also enjoy fresh juice and smoothies at Orangy every single morning (nicest people in the world), burritos from Burrito Revolution for most lunches, and of course nabbing a choice beach spot.

Our favorite beach spot is Playa De Los Muertos, just south of town adjacent to a gorgeous colorful cemetery (hence the name). It is a perfect little protected cove for littles to swim without any surf. There are so many cute shops, but my two favorite for really well curated handmade and vintage items are Artefakto and Evoke.

Spending the day adventuring then returning home to a glorious home cooked meal by the awesome staff of the estate, is truly one of the best things about this little trip. It is a great house to share with friends (which we did last year) or get grandma and grandpa to come and stay in the second bedroom (babysitters!).
