Science party ideas with the Land of Nod

Categories   Kids Birthday Parties

As you all know, we love a good party theme in these parts. Here’s one we haven’t seen on Cakelet yet, and one that is so absolutely perfect for boys (and girls!) preschool and up… A Science Party!

Preschool age kids looooove learning how things work and seeing materials transformed into something new. This modern party kit with a science theme from Land of Nod was a perfect starting point for a bright, geometric birthday party. We love the idea of starting with themed party essentials and using the colors and style to help you craft the rest of the party on your own. We added some fun food, paper garlands, billy balls, and a confetti cake.

To make graph paper party hats, we simply printed graph paper from a file we found online. But if you happen to have a stash of graph paper at home, all the better! The cupcakes followed this simple recipe and really were delicious.

We ordered billy balls from Bloominous (hello, genius idea… mail order flowers!) to add a simple natural element to the table. They’re launching a “Flower Market” on their site very soon where you’ll be able to order a la carte flowers for any occasion. So much better than hoping the farmer’s market or grocery store will have what you’re looking for on the day of your party.

We followed one of our fave tutorials from Design Love Fest for the geo garland. You’ll have to excuse us for making them for every party we throw. They’re so fun.

And naturally we needed rainbow jello squares. What other food is more “science-y” than jello? It’s an experiment every time you make it! To get the colors that matched our party, we mixed different flavors together (lemon with a teeny bit of lime, for example) until the hue was perfect.

And for the cake topper, we simply hot glued one shape from each garland to a toothpick. World’s cutest 6 second DIY project.

Makes a cute photo backdrop too!

And for favors, it had to be GAK. The easiest, most satisfying “experiment” for the 3-5 crowd. It requires 3 ingredients and 6 minutes of your time for hours of entertainment. Recipe here.

This kit has the makings of an awesome party. Our boys loved a super styled Wednesday night dinner, as you can see.

Why is it a parenthetical that this party theme is also suited to girls? Why does a gender even need to be mentioned? I'm very disappointed in 100 LC for perpetuating the stereotype that science is for boys.

@Joy - Hey there! Oh no, not at all! We mentioned boys only because our boys are the ones in the photos. Of course science is fun and interesting for girls too. We would never assume otherwise. My mom is actually a scientist!

The Fundamental Party Collection looks so great mixed in with all of your personal touches! As you say definitely something different and a great fun way to inspire all our mini scientists and mathematicians. Any opportunity to play with GAK is going to be a big hit!
