Modern natural shared boys room

Hi mamas! It’s Kristina popping in to share (finally) the room I’ve been working on for my two boys over the last year. I am NOT the world’s fastest when it comes to putting together spaces in our house. I agonize over purchases and slowly slowly slowly things come together. But miraculously, think I can officially say that my boys’ room is done. Especially as I’m expecting my third child in a few months, I need this project to be checked off this list so I can focus on the baby’s room! I really like how their room turned out and I hope you find some inspiration here too.

I love their reading nook with the lounger from Serena & Lily. It’s actually big enough for me and one of them to sit in together. Super cool chair! I’m a minimalist when it comes to kid stuff (thanks to my all time favorite, okay one of my all time favorite parenting books, Simplicity Parenting), and having a tiny bookshelf helps keep things orderly. We have tons of books in their closet and I cycle through them based on season and/or interests.

This bookcase from IKEA is a total workhorse when it comes to kids rooms. It’s super unobtrusive, easy to assemble, and inexpensive, but the frame is steel and it’s really durable. Makes a perfect frame for toy storage and display. The baskets are also from IKEA, and full of toys organized by type – Magnatiles, Tegu blocks, trains, musical instruments, etc. I heart organization when it comes to toys! If anyone has a good solution for Legos, please share.

The square prints are from Artifact Uprising and I like to switch them out every once in a while to keep things fresh. They ask me to tell them the stories of each photo when the new ones go up, and I love reliving little bits of their lives with them before bed.

Ahh, their bunkbeds. I know so many of you love these! And while they are a *big* purchase for a kids room (they are one of only two pieces of furniture we’ve bought in the last year for our new house), they fill me with ultimate joy every day. For reals. Soooo worth it! And if you happen to separate your kids at some point, you can take them apart to use the beds as a standard twin and loft in the future.

I added a bunch of pillows from The Vintage Rug Shop (she makes the perfect long lumbar pillows!) to the side of the lower bunk so the space is cozy for my younger son. The tie-dyed pillows I made myself. The kitty is from Bla Bla Kids, the snail is from Donna Wilson, and the blanket is from Gunn & Swain.

I bought this dresser on Craigslist seven years ago before my older son was born and while it’s a teeny bit too small for both of them at this point, I still like having a vintage piece in their room. The Big Sur print is by Jamie Street and available on Eventide Collective. And you can order it framed! Love how easy that makes things.

I love that their coat rack is hung at child height! I reassigned our Hang-It-All from the entry of our old house to their room and I think it’s so perfect for kids. It’s easy to hang things, it’s bright and cheerful, and it makes it simple for them to help keep their room tidy and our new entry a little less full of *stuff*. I chose the Alexander Calder print from LACMA because 1) it’s awesome 2) it’s kind of perfect with the vibe of their room, and 3) I tend to stay away from “kid” stuff for kids rooms. I like simple and neutral when it comes to home decor and I think that easily translates into kids’ rooms too. (Can you guess where I’m going with the baby’s room?!)

Without a doubt this boys have the coolest room in our house. The rest is such an eternal work in progress, but it makes me happy that they have a finished space to play and sleep.

You can see my family’s recent photos and a few snaps of our house here and follow along as I continue with the endless decorating of the rest our house here.
