Our friend Mercie Ghimire turned us on to the beautiful new kid’s rug line from Armadillo&Co, an Australia-based artisan-produced home decor company. Three things that stand out to us: 1) their rugs are very cute 2) their nursery design ideas are adorable 3) the artisans (and their villages) that weave ArmadilloCo‘s textiles are supported by a portion of the sales from each rug. Check, check, check.

And the story behind Jodie and Sally’s partnership and their philosophy as business women (and mothers!) is so inspired.

“Jodie Fried and Sally Pottharst started Armadillo&Co back in 2009, after a meeting by chance led them to discover that what they had in common was the search for the uncommon. In their hunt for honest and earthy rugs for their own homes, no existing product matched their passion. So what they couldn’t find, they decided to make.

Together they now share over 30 years of experience in design and textiles with what they now consider their extended family of artisans and weavers in India. All of Armadillo&Co‘s rugs are hand woven from sustainable natural fibers including pure wool, jute, cotton and hemp, with every piece embracing Fair Trade practices. Both Jodie and Sally have also recognized that their artisans have an incredibly skilled lineage to preserve, and every weaver is selected not only for their hands but for their heart. For Jodie and Sally it’s all about combining aesthetics with ethics. Every purchase gifts back to the local weaver’s villages, with the company collaborating and contributing to these communities through building schools and funding learning for students. Armadillo&Co aims for its rugs to lie lightly on this earth.”
